The 13th arrondissement is a quiet, elegant and rather large area of Paris, off the beaten path, though not lacking sites of cultural interest and noteworthy character. The most significant attractions of this area, especially for contemporary architecture lovers, are the François Mitterand National Library and the entire Left Bank district, an ambitious urban project designed by Christian de Portzamparc and Norman Foster, among others, which include a variety of contemporary buildings for commercial and administrative use. Those who love a more traditional Paris can visit the Manifacture des Gobelins, a wonderful eighteenth century building commissioned by King Henry IV to manufacture tapestries and carpets, as well as the Butte aux Cailles, a delightful hill once dominated by windmills and nowadays a residential area with villas, picturesque views and bars and restaurants, where visitors can relax after a day in the chaotic capital. Under the Butte, on Boulevard Blanqui, one of the most important food markets of the city is held every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday, selling products at affordable rates.
