Area description

The apartment is located in the 4th arrondissement, not far from the Picasso Museum, the Hotel de Ville, Notre Dame, the Isle Saint Louis, the Centre Pompidou and Place des Vosges, built by Henry IV at the beginning of the 1600s and constructed in a particular brick and stone manner found only in Paris. The Marais is a typically bourgeois neighbourhood which covers areas of the 3rd and 4th arrondissements, on the Rive Droite of Paris (right bank of the Seine). Most of the buildings in this district are very old. It partly explains the very small streets. This area is full of tales from the past. It is very rich thanks to its historical background and its location. It has been a key part of Paris since almost the very foundation of the city itself. South of the Pompidou Centre, rue Renard runs down to the Hôtel de Ville, the seat of the city's government and a mansion of gargantuan proportions in florid neo-Renaissance style, modelled pretty much on the previous building burned down in the Commune. An illustrated history of this edifice, always a prime target in riots and revolutions, is displayed along the platform of M° Châtelet on the Neuilly Vincennes line. Within very easy walking distance is also the Musée de l’Histoire de France - a museum of French history managed by the State Archive - and the Picasso Museum, housed into the prestigious Hotel Salé, built between 1656 and 1659 and reckoned as one of the most famous of the Marais district. At less than 15 minutes on foot is the modern Les Halles district: it is a big urban renewal project comprising the underground shopping mall ‘Forum’ with restaurants, shops and cinema, and a railway/subway station, which has become the biggest and most trafficked underground station in the world. The project also comprises gardens and pedestrian tree-lined streets. Some of the services in the area: shops, banks, restaurants.
